SEO pricing: what SEO and marketing management actually cost in 2026
SEO costs an average of $2,917 per month, based on Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. Most businesses pay $1,000 to $2,500 per month, per Backlinko's survey of 300+ SEO professionals. Local SEO is cheaper: providers serving local markets charge $1,557 per month on average (Ahrefs).
Those are the real numbers. Below is the full table, plus what each price level actually buys you, because a $500 retainer and a $5,000 retainer are not the same service with different logos.
We run marketing for home-service companies, so we read a lot of competitor proposals. Most pricing pages hide the number and make you book a call to hear it. We'd rather show you the market rates first, then tell you how we price against them.
Marketing services pricing table (industry data)
These are published US-market ranges from named surveys and pricing guides, not our quotes. Every figure is sourced.
| Service | Typical monthly cost | What the number is based on | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local SEO | $1,557/mo average; realistic range $500–$3,000 depending on market | Average rate charged by providers serving local markets, from a 439-provider survey | Ahrefs SEO pricing survey |
| SEO retainer (broader/national) | $1,000–$2,500/mo most common; $2,501–$5,000 in competitive industries; $5,000+ enterprise | Survey of 300+ SEO professionals, updated for 2026 | Backlinko SEO pricing study |
| Paid ads management (Google/Meta) | 10–20% of ad spend, or $1,000–$3,000/mo flat. Ad spend itself is separate and typically $1,000–$10,000/mo | Agency fee benchmarks from WebFX's PPC pricing research | WebFX PPC pricing |
| Fractional CMO | $5,000–$25,000/mo typical; $3,000–$8,000/mo for companies under $5M revenue; $200–$350/hr when billed hourly | Published rate guides for US fractional marketing executives | GTM 80/20 CMO cost guide · CMOx fCMO salary guide |
| AI visibility (GEO/AEO) | $1,500–$5,000/mo for small businesses; tiered programs run $2,000–$12,000/mo; monitoring tools alone $10–$1,000/mo | WebFX GEO cost research and First Page Sage's published tier pricing | WebFX GEO cost guide · First Page Sage GEO breakdown |
Three things the table can't show you:
- Hours are the real product. Backlinko's data puts a $1,001–$2,500 retainer at roughly 20–40 hours of work per month. A $300 "full-service SEO" plan buys maybe 3 hours. Do that math on any quote you get.
- Agencies charge about 30% more than freelancers (Backlinko). You're paying for a team and a track record. Sometimes that's worth it. Sometimes you're paying for their office.
- The fee is not the budget. Ads management fees sit on top of ad spend. A "$1,500/mo ads package" with $1,000 of actual spend behind it will not fill a schedule.
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO costs $1,557 per month on average, per Ahrefs' survey of SEO providers serving local markets. For a single-location home-service company in a mid-size metro, expect quotes between $500 and $3,000 per month. Multi-location or a brutal market like Phoenix plumbing pushes you toward the top of that range.
What should that money buy? Google Business Profile management, review velocity, local landing pages, citations, and on-page work tied to the services you actually sell — the work our local SEO service covers. If a local SEO quote doesn't mention your Google Business Profile and reviews, walk. For most local trades those two move the map pack more than anything on your website.
One caution from inside the industry: local SEO is the most commoditized service on this table, which is why $99/mo offers exist. They mostly buy you a monthly PDF.
What ads management should cost
The standard structure is 10–20% of ad spend, or a flat $1,000–$3,000 per month, whichever way the agency leans (WebFX). Percentage pricing scales down as spend goes up.
Two questions expose a weak ads shop faster than any price discussion:
- "Do I own the ad account?" You should. If the agency owns it, your history and data leave when they do.
- "What happens to junk leads?" On Google Local Services Ads you can dispute bad leads and get the money back. An agency that isn't disputing junk is quietly spending your budget on wrong numbers and solicitors.
What a fractional CMO costs
A fractional CMO runs $5,000 to $25,000 per month in the US, with companies under $5M in revenue typically paying $3,000 to $8,000 (GTM 80/20). Hourly engagements run $200–$350 per hour (CMOx). We break the home-service version of this math down in our fractional CMO cost guide.
The catch most owners find out late: many fractional CMOs are strategy only. They build the plan, then you still hire an agency, a media buyer, and a web person to run it. Priced that way, the real number is the CMO fee plus everything under it. When you compare options, compare the full stack, not the top line.
What AI visibility (GEO) costs
This is the newest line on the table. Getting your company recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews now has its own service category, and the pricing has settled faster than you'd expect: $1,500–$5,000 per month for small businesses per WebFX's research, with First Page Sage publishing tiers from $2,000 to $12,000 per month. Monitoring software alone runs $10–$1,000 per month.
Honest read: for a local home-service company, most GEO work overlaps heavily with good local SEO. Reviews, real service pages, consistent listings, and being the obvious answer in your area. Be skeptical of anyone selling it to you as a separate mystery line item at a premium.
How QuantumCrew prices against this market
We don't publish a rate card. A two-truck shop and an $8M operation should not pay the same number, and a package tier pretends they should. Every engagement is scoped to an outcome: what your revenue needs to do, and which of our managed systems get you there.
What we will put in writing:
- Your cost is capped. A set monthly ceiling it can never exceed, no matter how high revenue climbs.
- Ad spend passes through at cost. We don't mark up your media. You see every dollar.
- Build hard up front, then run lean on performance. Three-month build minimum, then month to month. If the work isn't producing, firing us is easy. That's on purpose.
- We report what we do. We won't promise rankings or lead counts we can't control, and we won't quote you a price before we've seen your numbers.
Twenty minutes on a call and you'll have your number, based on your market and your goals, not a package tier.
SEO pricing FAQs
How much does SEO cost per month?
The average is $2,917 per month across all providers (Ahrefs, 439 providers surveyed). Most businesses land between $1,000 and $2,500 per month, per Backlinko's survey of 300+ SEO professionals. Under $500/mo usually buys guidance without execution.
How much does local SEO cost?
$1,557 per month on average (Ahrefs). Single-location home-service companies typically see quotes from $500 to $3,000 per month depending on market competitiveness and how many services and cities you're targeting.
Why is SEO so expensive?
Because it's hours of skilled work, not software. Backlinko's data ties each price tier to time: a mid-range retainer buys 20–40 hours of monthly work across technical fixes, content, and links. When a price looks too good, divide it by a fair hourly rate and see how many hours you're really getting.
Is paying for SEO worth it for a small business?
Run the math on your ticket size. A water heater install at $2,500 needs one extra job a month to cover a typical local SEO retainer. But SEO compounds slowly. Expect 3 to 6 months before movement and 12+ months for real ROI. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is lying to you.
How much do agencies charge to manage Google Ads?
10–20% of your ad spend, or a flat fee of $1,000–$3,000 per month (WebFX). Ad spend is separate; most businesses spend $1,000–$10,000 per month on the ads themselves, with clicks averaging $1–$5 and much higher in competitive home-service markets.
How much does a fractional CMO cost?
$5,000–$25,000 per month is the typical US range, and companies under $5M in revenue usually pay $3,000–$8,000 (GTM 80/20). Hourly rates run $200–$350 (CMOx). Ask whether execution is included or whether you're buying strategy and hiring the doers separately.
